The Great Ocean Road International Marathon is a new and adventurous concept in Australian distance running.
The road from Lorne to Apollo Bay will provide the most spectacular and challenging course of any marathon in the world. The international marathon is being publicised and promoted worldwide and has the capacity to appeal to runners and walkers of all abilities.
The marathon is designed to be a tourism drawcard for the Apollo Bay-Colac-Otway-Lorne region, four races will be held over the weekend. The first day will feature a 6.5 kilometre race to Marriner’s Lookout and back and a 14 kilometer event to Paradise and return in Apollo Bay Saturday, May 19. The main event, the international marathon will be run on Sunday May 20 from Lorne to Apollo Bay. Starting at 8am and starting at the same time, a half marathon from Kennett River to Apollo Bay. The whole weekend will have a carnival atmosphere will displays from sponsors, kids rides and open air concerts, centred in Apollo Bay. Four-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Steve Moneghetti is the event’s patron. Fellow Olympian, Lee Troop is the event’s ambassador-at-large. Both Lee and Steve are based in Victoria, Steve in Ballarat and Lee in Geelong.
All finishers in the marathon and half-marathon will be awarded The Subaru Medal and in the opening two events will be presented with a certificate. All participants compete for over $32,000 in Prize money. Entry forms may be obtained by calling Caribou Publications on 03 5224 2466 or visiting the marathon website.
